Securonix gets More Bang for its AWS Storage Buck with Zesty Disk
“Zesty’s a real game-changer. It’s the only tool I’ve seen that adjusts the volume in real-time based on how much disk space you use. It’s not just about saving costs, it’s about keeping things stable and secure. They also saved us a lot of operational overhead. So, yes, I’d recommend Zesty 100%!”

“Before Zesty Disk, we ended up expending costs on unused volumes that were just laying in our environment. Keeping unused disk volumes in our environment was creating an operational overhead to identify and remove.”

“Zesty Disk is a win-win for Securonix. It has exceeded our expectations by not only eliminating operational issues but also trimming expenses arising from unused storage to alerts and overhead.”

“We are very impressed with Zesty as a design partner. They are very attentive and responsive to fulfilling our requirements across all our environments, whether building a new customized feature or debugging. Zesty Disk are more than a software, they’re a key part of our team.”

Brief
Securonix is a leading cybersecurity company providing next-generation cyber-threat detection for Fortune 500 companies. Globally, customers use Securonix to address their insider threats, cyber threats, cloud security, fraud, and application security monitoring requirements.
Securonix unified defense SIEM platform is a multi-layered infrastructure that is built using the power of machine learning and big data. Amazon EBS is used on the app, search engine, and processing layers.
Key
Challenges
Securonix’s main challenge was simplifying and optimizing block storage management.
Key
Results
Securonix has found a simpler way to consistently save costs on unused disk capacity and operational overhead – replacing manual disk management with automatic real-time resizing of filesystems.
The Challenge:
Securonix provisions AWS Block Storage for its Search Engine, EMR, and applications layer. However, this static size allocation poses challenges: 50% of disk capacity regularly goes unused, and while it incurs significant waste, the alternative is potential disruptions due to manual disk extension and frequent on-call alerts.
Securonix’s existing system was configured to automatically increase disk capacity via a lambda function whenever disk utilization reached 80%. Though this approach prevented stability issues, the company incurred significant costs for under-utilized volumes in its environment once the data had been moved to the archive.
To manage surplus disk capacity, Securonix regularly performed manual disk contraction. This involves spinning up a new volume, attaching a new disk with less capacity, syncing data from the old disk to the new disk, and then deleting the old disk. This process was not only time-consuming, but it also required temporarily bringing down the service and causing operational disruptions.
Zesty’s Solution:
Securonix deployed Zesty Disk’s cloud storage auto-scaler to address these challenges in its cloud environment. By automatically scaling up or scaling down the filesystem based on its real-time needs, Securonix could consistently utilize 75 – 80% of their AWS EBS provisioned capacity, from what was previously a 30 or 40% utilization rate. This improvement in disk utilization demonstrated that Zesty Disk wasn’t just a one-time cost-cutting measure. Month to month, it delivered consistent savings on Securonix’s instances.
Customer satisfaction is one of Securonix’s top priorities, and downtime from manual disk contraction was sub-optimal. By automatically resizing filesystems in run-time, Zesty Disk helped ensure their apps ran continuously without issues, eliminating the need to pause activity as volumes are scaled.
Securonix prioritizes data protection. However, this concern was quickly mitigated as the data on the disk is not collected by Zesty, and Securonix retains exclusive control over their data. In order to scale the volume, Zesty Disk only requires access to usage metrics and disk meta data.
Once deployed, Zesty Disk removed the need for manual disk management which includes the monitoring of disk utilization, the setting and responding to alerts, and reissuing of new volumes to bring down disk size. The cloud architecture team was thrilled with this workload reduction of their cloud management tasks.
By leveraging a solution that is augmented into native AWS infrastructure, Zesty Disk has done away with the added complexity of investing in a third-party full-stack storage solution, mitigating potential security concerns and unnecessary expenses.
The Result:
Since onboarding Zesty Disk’s block storage auto-scaler, Securonix engineers have experienced greater peace of mind, through cost-optimized storage that does not compromise performance. Tangible results from implementing Zesty Disk back this sentiment. Firstly, disk utilization rates have shot up, averaging 75%-80%. This leaves a comfortable buffer of 20-25% to accommodate any sudden data surges. Secondly, the financial implications have been equally impressive. Total block storage costs across their infrastructure layers have consistently decreased by approximately 50%, enabling the company to achieve savings of more than $200K every month, contributing both to engineering’s KPIs and the company’s bottom line.
